Urban or Country: Choosing Your Side of Texas

The Lone Star State is often known for ranches, cowboys, and TexMex fusion cuisine. But it’s quickly increasing its share of major metro cities. Texas is home to three of the US's ten biggest cities. Yet, the big blue skies and country living are still available in much of the state.

So here are the best places to live in the big city life, country quiet, and somewhere in between!

The Big Three Cities

Populations are booming in three of the US's largest cities: Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio.

Dallas: Population 1.3 Million Dallas is a thriving city with touches of cowboy history. The surprisingly green city offers mild winters, hot summers and is one of the best places to get and keep a job. Dallas is a hotbed for entrepreneurs and business owners.

Houston: Population 2.3 Million

Houston is another great city to live, with a low cost of living and a booming economy. With even milder temperatures than Dallas, it’s a pretty temperate place to live year-round. You’ll have access to the arts and great food, not to mention excellent job security and professional sports.

San Antonio: Population 1.5 Million

San Antonio is another excellent choice, with cheap real estate compared to national averages and many job opportunities. You can find your place at the Home of the Alamo and enjoy the sports teams and no income tax.

Quiet Country Towns

If you’re looking for small town living with room to ranch or hunt, Texas offers lots of places to settle down. Here are two particularly famous small Texas towns.

Round Top: Population 81

It’s hard to imagine a quieter place than Round Top, Texas. This tiny town is primarily a retirement town and home to a famous antique show.

Friedrichsberg: Population 11,300

Fredericksburg is proud of its German heritage and is home to many wineries. So if you’re looking for land, quiet, and a chance to make wine, it’s a great place.

The Middle Ground

Want it both ways? Then check out some of these popular quiet towns within reach of the Big Three Texas cities.

Magnolia: Population 2,300

Made famous by the HGTV hit Fixer Upper with Chip and Joanna Gaines, Magnolia, Texas, is a gorgeous small town. You can find urban living within the city limits, but ranches surround the outskirts. And it’s just under an hour from Houston!

Pearsall: Population 11,243

Pearsall is a beautiful place, just about an hour southwest of San Antonio. With much cheaper real estate than national averages, it’s no wonder that the Pearsall population has grown nearly 15% in the last two years!

Pilot Point: Population 4,500

At an hour north of downtown Dallas, Pilot Point offers all the charm of a small town with easy access to big city amenities. Pilot Points boasts “rich sandy soil,” so it’s a natural place for ranches and horse training.
